Many factors can influence the tools and approaches used in art therapy, including the individual's interests, abilities, and therapeutic goals. Some art therapy practitioners may specialize in one media or technique, such as painting, drawing, or sculpting. Others may have more extensive training and the ability to deal with various mediums and approaches. Individuals are encouraged to explore and develop their working style to establish their creative voice and honestly express themselves.
PAINTING
Painting is a typical medium used in art therapy to address a wide range of mental health concerns, promote relaxation and stress alleviation, and improve self-awareness and social abilities. Acrylic, oil, watercolor, gouache, tempera, and pastel are common painting mediums.
DRAWING
Drawing is an art therapy medium that can help people explore their feelings and thoughts in an accessible and expressive way. Pencil, charcoal, pastels, and ink are examples of drawing media. Hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, smudging, blending, erasing, scumbling, layering, line drawing, wash, scribbling, Sumi-e, and ink brush calligraphy are among the drawing techniques used in art therapy to create depth, texture, luminosity, and the illusion of shadows, as well as to add interest and movement. Drawing to process tough emotions entails exploring and processing emotions via the act of drawing.
FREE FORM
Free form art, in which the individual has complete freedom to create whatever they want, guided visualization, in which the art therapy practitioner leads the client through a meditation or visualization exercise and provides prompts for the client to explore in their painting, and symbolism, in which the client uses certain objects, images, or themes to represent something else, often on a deeper, emotional level.
COLLAGE
A collage is a type of art in which different materials are placed and affixed to a surface, like paper or canvas, to generate a composition. It is a versatile medium that may be created with a number of materials, including paper, fabric, pictures, and objects, as well as processes such as cutting and pasting, paper tearing, and assemblage. Many artists have employed collage throughout history, and it may be both expressive and therapeutic. It can also be used to express ideas and feelings by combining and arranging various materials.
SCULPTURE
Sculpture can be an effective technique in art therapy because it allows people to express themselves and explore their feelings through the creative process. In sculpture-based art therapy sessions, the practitioner may accompany the client through the sculpture-making process, provide support and encouragement, and employ techniques such as guided visualization to assist the client in focusing their thoughts and tapping into their creativity. Sculptures can be made from a range of materials, including clay, paper, wire, and plaster. Sculpting techniques include modeling, casting, and assemblage, among others. Sculpture can help people develop their fine motor skills, solve problems, and express their feelings and thoughts.
Inclusive, the choice of materials and techniques in art therapy is a crucial component of the therapeutic process, and the practitioner may urge the client to try several mediums and techniques to see what works best for them.
